What We Help With
Therapy can help with a wide range of concerns. These are some of the areas we work with most often, although is not a comprehensive list. If what what you want to work on is not listed here, reach out and we can talk through whether therapy is a good fit.
Anxiety
Support for a range of anxiety concerns, including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and specific phobias (such as emetophobia, the fear of vomiting). Treatment draws on CBT, exposure, and acceptance-based strategies, always at a manageable pace.
Depression
Support for symptoms of depression such as low mood, low motivation and energy, difficulty keeping up with everyday self-care like showering or brushing teeth, low self-esteem, and thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Treatment focuses on rebuilding positive and meaningful activity (behavioural activation), working with unhelpful thinking patterns, and strengthening social connection.
OCD
Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, including intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours that are hard to stop or interrupt. Treated with evidence-based approaches such as exposure and response prevention (ERP).
PTSD and trauma
Treatment for the effects of trauma and PTSD using trauma-focused, evidence-based therapies. Appropriate for workplace trauma, including first responders and healthcare professionals (such as paramedics, nurses, firefighters, police officers, and doctors), as well as childhood trauma, sexual assault, and experiences of racism or discrimination.
ADHD and autism
Strengths-based support for neurodivergent clients with ADHD, autism, or both. Therapy builds skills for organization, focus, emotion regulation, everyday self-care, managing sensory overstimulation, and social connection. The approach emphasizes personal strengths while addressing the challenges that get in the way of day-to-day functioning.
Substance use
Support for nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and other substance use. Therapy works from both harm-reduction and abstinence approaches, helping clients define their own goals and build practical tools to moderate or reduce use.
Other Areas We Address
- Anger issues: Therapy helps clients identify their emotions, build tools to regulate them, and develop more effective, assertive ways of communicating with others.
- Stress and burnout: For those carrying high levels of stress, whether from conflict at home, the demands of new parenthood, or burnout at work. Therapy covers self-care strategies, healthy boundaries, relaxation techniques, and communication tools.
- Parenting and child behavioural problems: Support for parents in addressing challenges such as child aggression, frequent tantrums, difficulties with school attendance, and more.
- Gender, sexuality, and identity: Suntree Wellness is an LGBTQIA2S+ affirming clinic. Therapy offers a safe, non-judgmental space to explore questions of gender, sexuality, and identity, navigate coming out or transitions, and work through the stress that can come from stigma or a lack of acceptance.
- And more: It is hard to capture every area of focus in a single list. Reach out to the clinic for more information or to schedule a free consultation.
How We Work
Therapy at Suntree Wellness is grounded in evidence-based approaches, drawing on what fits each person rather than applying one method to everyone. The work is rooted primarily in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), with dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)-informed skills for managing intense emotions. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is treated using exposure and response prevention (ERP), and trauma is addressed through trauma-focused approaches including cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), and trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT). Your psychologist works with you to decide which approach makes the most sense for your goals.
